Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the formal opening of the sluice gates of the Stanley Reservoir at Mettur to release vital irrigation water for the Cauvery delta farming districts. The decision followed copious monsoon inflows from upstream catchment areas in Karnataka, which brought the reservoir to its full capacity ahead of schedule.
Presiding over a specialized consultation meeting with district collectors and water resources engineers, Stalin outlined four key operational priorities for the water release. He instructed district collectors along the Cauvery banks to implement comprehensive security measures at bathing ghats and pilgrimage spots for the upcoming Aadi Perukku festival, where large crowds traditionally congregate.
The Chief Minister directed authorities to convene immediate coordination meetings with agricultural associations to ensure optimal water distribution across branch canals. He emphasized efficient conservation and utilization of released water in irrigation tanks, while mandating that revenue authorities evacuate vulnerable riverbank dwellers to safe shelters well before peak discharges.
Stalin affirmed that timely release of irrigation water provides immense economic confidence to delta agriculturists embarking on Kuruvai cultivation. He reiterated that protecting agrarian livelihoods while guaranteeing civilian safety along river basins remains a foremost governance priority.
