Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin hailed a historic verdict delivered by a seven-judge constitutional bench of the Supreme Court of India, which upheld the legal and constitutional validity of state governments providing sub-classification and internal reservations within Scheduled Castes. The verdict directly affirms Tamil Nadu's landmark legislation granting three percent internal reservation for the Arundhathiyar community.
Stalin recalled that in 2009, then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi constituted a high-level commission headed by Justice M.S. Janarthanam to collect empirical data regarding the extreme socio-economic marginalization faced by Arundhathiyars. Based on those empirical findings, Stalin, then serving as Local Administration Minister, piloted the historic reservation bill in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
The Chief Minister noted that the policy has empowered tens of thousands of Arundhathiyar youth to enter medical colleges, engineering institutions, and state administrative services over the past fifteen years. The Supreme Court's authoritative endorsement validates the Dravidian Model's data-driven, principled commitment to reaching the most vulnerable sections of society.
Stalin characterized the judgment as a monumental triumph for the social justice movement nationwide. He reaffirmed that Tamil Nadu will remain at the forefront of defending affirmative action and constitutional rights for historically oppressed communities.
