Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited the State Emergency Operations Centre in Ezhilagam, Chennai, to review emergency preparedness and flood response operations following massive surplus water discharge from Mettur Dam into the Cauvery river basin. With heavy monsoon inflows into reservoirs, the dam reached full capacity, necessitating controlled releases of over one lakh cusecs.
Stalin inspected live digital monitoring systems tracking reservoir levels, river discharge gauges, and weather radar feeds across central and delta districts. He interacted via video conference with district collectors of Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, and Thanjavur, directing them to maintain round-the-clock vigilance along low-lying riverbanks.
The Chief Minister ordered the immediate evacuation of families living in vulnerable riverine tracts to pre-identified relief shelters equipped with food, drinking water, medical supplies, and sanitation facilities. He instructed disaster response teams and fire personnel to stage equipment strategically near flood-prone locations to prevent loss of human lives.
Stalin emphasized that systematic disaster preparedness and proactive administrative monitoring minimize community distress during extreme weather events. He assured residents that the state government is fully mobilized to ensure public safety.
