Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin celebrated the revitalized appearance of the iconic Anna Flyover on Anna Salai in Chennai, highlighting its restored grandeur during its historic golden jubilee year. Constructed in 1973 under the visionary leadership of then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, the landmark was India's first major multi-tier road flyover, standing as an enduring symbol of Chennai's early urban engineering ambition.
In commemoration of its fiftieth anniversary, the Highways and Minor Ports Department undertook a comprehensive structural restoration and aesthetic overhaul of the entire elevated corridor. The project included structural repairs, anti-carbonation coatings, artistic mural paintings illustrating regional cultural heritage, dynamic decorative architectural lighting, and landscaped vertical gardens beneath the spans.
Stalin noted that the Anna Flyover represents an essential chapter in Tamil Nadu's infrastructure narrative, proving that the state has pioneered progressive urban transit solutions for half a century. Modernizing the historical structure preserves its architectural legacy while enhancing the visual elegance and vehicular efficiency of Chennai's busiest arterial roadway.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed that his government will continue balancing contemporary infrastructure expansion with the preservation and upgrading of historic civic landmarks across the state.
