Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin marked World Elephant Day by announcing that the state's wild elephant population has grown steadily due to focused wildlife conservation initiatives. Stalin noted that ancient Tamil classical literature celebrated elephants under numerous poetic names, illustrating the historic cultural and ecological bond shared between the gentle giants and the Tamil landscape.
The Chief Minister pointed out that since the DMK government assumed office in May 2021, synchronized elephant censuses and corridor protection programs have yielded positive demographic results. Tamil Nadu established the Agasthiyamalai Elephant Reserve as the fifth elephant reserve in the state, safeguarding vital migratory corridors across the Western Ghats.
Stalin commended the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, field trackers, and anti-poaching watchers for their round-the-clock efforts in curbing human-wildlife conflict and illegal poaching. Advanced drone surveillance, solar fencing subsidies, and rapid response teams have effectively mitigated rail-track accidents and crop-raiding incidents.
The Chief Minister reiterated that preserving keystone species like elephants is crucial for maintaining forest hydrology and biodiversity across Southern India. Stalin pledged that Tamil Nadu will expand habitat restoration and community-centered conservation models.
