Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin hoisted the national flag from the ramparts of Fort St. George in Chennai for the fourth consecutive time on the 78th Independence Day, marking the historic golden jubilee of Chief Ministers securing the right to unfurl the national flag. Stalin recalled that it was former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi who waged a principled constitutional campaign in 1974, establishing the vital democratic convention that state Chief Ministers hoist the national flag on Independence Day.

The Chief Minister emphasized that this constitutional breakthrough symbolized the triumph of federalism and recognized elected state leaders as the rightful custodians of regional democracy. During the ceremony, Stalin conferred prestigious honors, including the Thagaisal Thamizhar Award to veteran Gandhian Kumari Ananthan and state awards for scientific innovation, good governance, and public service.

Stalin reaffirmed that defending state rights and deepening democratic federalism remain foundational principles of the Dravidian Model governance philosophy. He declared that Tamil Nadu will continue walking with its head held high, advancing social harmony, progressive welfare, and economic growth while fiercely protecting constitutional democracy for future generations.
