Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed an urgent communication to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding the immediate release of long-overdue statutory funds under the centrally sponsored Samagra Shiksha educational scheme. Stalin strongly objected to the Union Government's decision to withhold sanctioned school education grants due to Tamil Nadu's principled refusal to implement certain contentious provisions of the National Education Policy.
The Chief Minister emphasized that education is an entry on the Concurrent List of the Indian Constitution, meaning state governments retain legislative and administrative autonomy to design school curricula suited to local socio-cultural contexts. He stressed that making legitimate financial allocations conditional upon enforcing unagreed federal educational mandates unconstitutionally infringes upon state rights and violates cooperative federalism.
Stalin highlighted that withholding critical educational funding directly jeopardizes the schooling, nutrition, and welfare of millions of disadvantaged children studying in government institutions across the state. He insisted that the fundamental right to education for underprivileged and marginalized students must never be held hostage to ideological or policy disagreements. The Chief Minister called upon the Union administration to respect constitutional federalism and disburse all pending educational grants immediately.
