Exactly 100 years ago, on 20th September 1924, Sir #JohnMarshall announced the discovery of the #IndusValleyCivilisation, reshaping the history of the Indian subcontinent. I look back with gratitude and say, "Thank you, John Marshall."

By taking right cognisance of the material culture of the #IVC, he linked it to the #DravidianStock.

My government has already announced that the centenary of this historic discovery will be marked by an international conference and the installation of a life-size statue of Sir John Marshall in Tamil Nadu.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin commemorated the centenary of Sir John Marshall's historic announcement on September 20, 1924, which revealed the existence of the Indus Valley Civilisation to the world and fundamentally transformed the historiography of the Indian subcontinent. Expressing profound historical gratitude to the British archaeologist, Stalin highlighted that Marshall astutely analyzed the material culture and linguistic affinities of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, connecting them directly with the ancient Dravidian civilization.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed that ongoing archaeological excavations across Tamil Nadu, particularly at Keeladi, Sivagalai, Korkai, and Porunai, provide compelling scientific evidence corroborating the deep cultural continuities between the Indus Valley and ancient Sangam civilization. He recalled his earlier announcement that the Tamil Nadu government will celebrate the centenary of Marshall's landmark discovery by convening a premier international academic conference of global archaeologists and historians in Chennai.

Furthermore, Stalin affirmed that a life-size statue of Sir John Marshall will be installed in Tamil Nadu to honor his epochal contribution to Asian antiquity. He emphasized that uncovering archaeological truth strengthens Tamil historical consciousness and reinforces regional cultural pride across the world.
