Thank you, Hon’ble @PiyushGoyal, for fully accepting my demands by banning single-use plastic cigarette lighters under ₹20 and now restricting the import of parts for cigarette lighters.
This welcome move strengthens Tamil Nadu’s matchbox manufacturers, safeguarding over a lakh jobs and reducing harmful plastic waste.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin welcomed the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry's decision to restrict the import of components for single-use plastic cigarette lighters. Expressing appreciation to Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Stalin noted that the central government had previously prohibited imports of finished plastic lighters priced under twenty rupees following urgent representations submitted by the Tamil Nadu government.
The Chief Minister highlighted that unchecked imports of cheap plastic lighters had severely depressed domestic demand for traditional wooden matchboxes, threatening the economic survival of thousands of cottage production units in southern Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that the comprehensive restriction will safeguard more than one lakh manufacturing jobs concentrated across Virudhunagar, Kovilpatti, and Thoothukudi districts, where rural women constitute a major portion of the cottage workforce.
Stalin affirmed that curbing disposable plastic imports not only protects indigenous cottage industries but also significantly curtails non-biodegradable synthetic waste across urban environments. He reiterated his administration's steadfast commitment to advocating for traditional micro and small enterprises, ensuring that regional livelihood concerns receive adequate protection through timely policy interventions at the national level.
