Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin convened an emergency high-level review meeting to assess the impact of torrential rainfall and subsequent flooding in Madurai district. The review meeting, attended by state cabinet ministers, the Madurai District Collector, Corporation Commissioner, and local legislators, focused on inspecting inundated residential localities, evaluating drainage bottlenecks, and coordinating prompt relief operations for affected residents.
During the administrative discussions, local representatives highlighted the critical vulnerability of the Sellur locality, which suffered severe waterlogging due to excess run-off overflowing existing channels. Responding decisively on the spot, Stalin sanctioned 12.30 crore rupees from state disaster management funds for the immediate construction of an additional surplus drainage canal in Sellur to permanently mitigate flooding risks.
The Chief Minister directed the Public Works and Municipal Administration departments to execute the drainage works on war footing using modern engineering designs. He also instructed district revenue authorities to distribute immediate emergency relief rations, conduct medical camps, and ensure comprehensive disinfection across all waterlogged wards, affirming that protecting citizen lives and property remains the government's paramount disaster response priority during severe seasonal monsoon emergencies.
