It is encouraging that the Hon’ble President of Sri Lanka, @anuradisanayake, is engaging in discussions with our Hon’ble Prime Minister @narendramodi, to address the concerns of Tamil fishermen in a humanitarian and peaceful manner, emphasising the need to avoid of conflict.

I appeal to Hon’ble @anuradisanayake to consider the release of Tamil Nadu fishermen detained by the Sri Lankan Navy and the return of their seized boats.

Such a gesture will infuse confidence in these deliberations and mark a constructive step towards fostering stronger ties and a harmonious future between our two nations.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin welcomed reports that Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake engaged in constructive discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the longstanding grievances of Tamil fishermen peacefully and avoid maritime conflicts. Stalin characterized dialogue between the two national leaders as a positive development toward achieving a peaceful, lasting resolution to sensitive cross-border fishing rights.

The Chief Minister made an urgent humanitarian appeal to President Dissanayake to demonstrate bilateral goodwill by ordering the immediate release of all Tamil Nadu fishermen currently detained in Sri Lankan custody. In addition, Stalin demanded the prompt restitution of all mechanized fishing trawlers and motorized craft impounded by the Sri Lankan Navy, pointing out that confiscated vessels represent the primary livelihood assets of impoverished coastal fishing families.

Stalin asserted that such a compassionate reciprocal gesture would infuse mutual confidence into ongoing diplomatic talks and foster enduring ties between India and Sri Lanka. He reiterated that resolving maritime fishing disputes through humanitarian engagement rather than militarized confrontation remains essential for regional stability and sustainable coastal community welfare across the Palk Bay region.
