Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin piloted a unanimous resolution in the state legislative assembly demanding the immediate withdrawal of UGC draft regulations that empower Governors to control Vice-Chancellor selections. Stalin pointed out that while state taxpayers fund university land, professor salaries, student scholarships, and campus infrastructure, central directives unconstitutionally empower unelected gubernatorial offices to dictate university leadership. He characterized the proposed regulations as an overt attempt to dismantle Tamil Nadu's national leadership in higher education.
The Chief Minister asserted that federal interference threatens the quality, democratization, and affirmative action policies that made Tamil Nadu a premier educational hub. He noted that education resides in the Concurrent List of the Constitution, making unilateral central directives an egregious overreach against state legislative sovereignty. If the Union government fails to heed the united voice of the Tamil Nadu legislature, Stalin warned that the state will mobilize nationwide opposition and seek judicial redress.
Stalin affirmed that the state government will never permit central agencies to subvert democratic accountability in state universities. Defending academic autonomy against ideological colonization remains essential for safeguarding public education and federal democracy nationwide.
