Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin shared vivid glimpses of folk artists performing beating drums, parai rhythms, and Koothu dances at the Namma Ooru Thiruvizha and Chennai Sangamam celebrations. Stalin observed that these indigenous musical traditions embody the primal energy and collective spirit of the Tamil countryside. Re-creating rural cultural carnivals across metropolitan Chennai allows diverse urban audiences, especially youth, to reconnect with their roots during the annual Pongal festivities.
The Chief Minister commended DMK Deputy General Secretary and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Kanimozhi Karunanidhi for pioneering Chennai Sangamam and ensuring its grand revival under the Dravidian Model governance. Staged across prominent public parks, beachfront promenades, and suburban open grounds, the open-air festival provides a dignified platform and substantial performance honorariums for hundreds of rural artists. Stalin noted that folk arts convey egalitarian social messages that dissolve artificial social hierarchies.
Stalin affirmed that preserving traditional percussion and dance forms remains a cornerstone of the state's cultural policy. He reiterated the government's commitment to supporting rural folk troupes and expanding cultural tourism throughout Tamil Nadu. Preserving these timeless artistic disciplines enriches public life and community harmony.
