I had written to the Hon’ble Union Education Minister requesting the rescheduling of the UGC NET exams. It is a rightful decision that the exams have now been postponed!

It has become a recurring practice for the Union Government to announce major exams on Tamil cultural festival days, only to reschedule them following state intervention.

Let us hope that, moving forward, every institution in this country respects its rich diversity and considers the sentiments of all its people when making decisions.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin welcomed the Union Government's decision to postpone the UGC NET examinations, which were originally scheduled to clash with the major Tamil harvest festival Pongal. Stalin had formally written to the Union Education Minister highlighting the severe inconvenience imposed upon thousands of Tamil candidates who celebrate this cultural event. Describing the postponement as a rightful outcome, Stalin noted that timely state intervention successfully defended candidate rights.

The Chief Minister criticized the central examination agencies for repeatedly scheduling national entrance tests on major southern regional festival days without consulting local academic calendars. He pointed out that having to intervene repeatedly to secure exam postponements reflects a chronic insensitivity within central bureaucracies toward India's cultural diversity. Stalin expressed hope that federal institutions will proactively accommodate state festivals when drafting examination schedules, avoiding unnecessary distress for aspiring candidates.

Stalin affirmed that genuine national unity depends on institutional respect for regional linguistic identities, cultural traditions, and festive calendars. He reaffirmed the state government's vigil against administrative neglect, assuring students that Tamil Nadu will consistently protect their academic opportunities. Protecting candidate welfare remains an uncompromised priority.
