On this #WorldWetlandsDay, I am extremely delighted to share the designation of two more Ramsar sites, Sakkarakottai and Therthangal Bird Sanctuaries in Ramanathapuram District, increasing the number of #Ramsar sites in Tamil Nadu to 20, the highest in the country, with 19 sites designated subsequent to the launch of the Tamil Nadu #WetlandsMission in 2021.
Our #DravidianModel Government remains committed to conserving wetlands and will continue to take proactive steps to protect our rich natural heritage.

Commemorating World Wetlands Day, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the formal designation of two additional wetlands, Sakkarakottai Bird Sanctuary and Therthangal Bird Sanctuary in Ramanathapuram district, as Ramsar sites of international ecological importance. This landmark recognition elevates the total count of Ramsar sites in Tamil Nadu to twenty, the highest for any state across India, highlighting the state's preeminent standing in biodiversity preservation.
The Chief Minister underscored that nineteen of the state's twenty Ramsar sites were notified following the launch of the pioneering Tamil Nadu Wetlands Mission in 2021. He explained that dedicated scientific surveys, community-based wetland management, and aggressive protection of migratory avian flyways have systematically restored vital water bodies across drought-prone coastal districts like Ramanathapuram, strengthening ecological resilience against extreme climate volatility.
Stalin reaffirmed that the Dravidian Model governance is resolutely dedicated to protecting wetlands as essential carbon sinks and natural flood barriers. He commended the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and local conservation bodies for securing global recognitions through meticulous ecological documentation. Stalin pledged that the government will continue expanding protected wetland reserves, safeguarding Tamil Nadu's natural heritage and ensuring water security for local agrarian communities.
