Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin condemned the Union Government's persistent indifference toward the repeated arrests and harassment of Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. Stalin emphasized that despite his multiple formal letters urging immediate and decisive diplomatic intervention, the central government has failed to take meaningful steps to safeguard the lives and constitutional rights of Indian citizens at sea.

In response to this administrative apathy, DMK members of Parliament alongside allied party representatives staged a resolute demonstration on the Parliament premises in New Delhi. The protesting lawmakers demanded the unconditional release of ninety-seven detained fishermen and the return of two hundred and sixteen seized motorized fishing trawlers currently in Sri Lankan custody.

The Chief Minister emphasized that fishing trawlers represent the entire life savings and economic sustenance of coastal families, warning that their continued impoundment drives coastal communities into severe financial distress. Stalin urged the Union External Affairs Ministry to abandon its passive approach, engage diplomatically with Colombo, and secure a permanent, binding maritime solution that protects the traditional fishing rights and livelihoods of Tamil Nadu's coastal population.
