Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin carried out an on-site inspection of Chennai Metro Rail Phase II development works, reviewing structural progress along key transit lines. Stalin emphasized that the metro rail system, originally conceived under M. Karunanidhi's leadership with Stalin as Deputy Chief Minister, represents a cornerstone of modern public transport that is moving forward with renewed momentum under the Dravidian Model governance.
Stalin explained that after administrative inertia under the previous government, Tamil Nadu took the lead by allocating substantial state revenues to keep Phase II construction moving ahead. Following the formalization of central contributions, works have been expedited, with the Poonamallee-Porur stretch scheduled to commence commercial passenger operations before the close of 2025. Stalin instructed CMRL leadership to maintain strict engineering quality while adhering to project milestones.
The Chief Minister noted that expanding comprehensive metro transit will alleviate surface road congestion, reduce vehicular emissions, and provide seamless mass mobility for millions of Chennai citizens. Stalin reiterated his strong demand for the Union Government to expedite formal approvals and capital allocations for proposed metro rail networks in Coimbatore and Madurai to drive balanced regional development.
