The Chennai Metro Rail Project, initiated during Thalaivar Kalaignar's tenure as Chief Minister, with me serving as Deputy Chief Minister, is now advancing rapidly under our #DravidianModel Government. After delays in the previous administration, we took the lead in implementing Phase II, making Tamil Nadu the first state to continue metro expansion through its own funding. With the recently approved Union contribution, we are expediting the works further.
By the end of 2025, the Poonamallee – Porur stretch will be operational. I've directed @cmrlofficial to accelerate the completion of the remaining sections. Once finished, Chennai will set new standards in connectivity, urban mobility and public transportation.
Today, as I inspected the ongoing works, I was elated to witness our vision taking shape and expanding. At this moment, I once again urge the Union Government to swiftly approve metro rail projects for Coimbatore and Madurai.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin conducted an extensive inspection of ongoing construction works on Chennai Metro Rail Phase II, reviewing station progress and track laying across crucial corridors. Stalin recalled that the Chennai Metro was initiated under former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi when Stalin served as Deputy Chief Minister, noting that the project is now expanding rapidly under the Dravidian Model administration after prolonged delays under the previous regime.
The Chief Minister highlighted that Tamil Nadu became the first state in India to proceed with massive metro expansion using state funding when central approvals were delayed. Following recent Union clearances, execution has accelerated significantly, with Stalin announcing that the Poonamallee-Porur elevated stretch will become operational by late 2025. He directed officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited to maintain strict construction timelines for all remaining phases.
Stalin emphasized that upon completion, Phase II will establish new national benchmarks for urban mobility and public transit integration across the Chennai metropolitan area. He also urged the Union Government to swiftly approve metro rail projects for Coimbatore and Madurai to meet growing public transportation demands.
