Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched a sharp rebuttal against Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who claimed that adopting the three-language formula represents the constitutional rule of law. Stalin challenged the Union Minister to cite any article in the Constitution of India that mandates a three-language formula, pointing out that New Delhi possesses no legal authority to impose linguistic policies on unwilling states.

The Chief Minister reminded central leaders that the Indian federation is an indestructible union of distinct states, and that education is placed on the Concurrent List where states possess legislative rights. Stalin condemned the Union Government's ultimatum withholding statutory educational funds from Tamil Nadu students until the state accepts the National Education Policy, characterizing this fiscal tactic as unconstitutional blackmail.

Stalin asserted that the Tamil people will not tolerate arrogant threats from central ministers regarding legitimate tax revenues generated within the state. He warned New Delhi that Tamil Nadu has a proud history of resisting linguistic hegemony, and that continuing to treat state entitlements as central favors will provoke strong democratic resistance. Stalin reiterated that Tamil Nadu will firmly preserve its two-language policy.
