Commemorating Tamil Literature Renaissance Day on the birth anniversary of celebrated scholar U.V. Swaminatha Iyer, revered as Tamil Thatha, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin paid tribute to his monumental contributions in recovering classical heritage. Stalin noted that while contemporary archaeological excavations at Keeladi and Sivagalai provide material proof of ancient Tamil civilization, it was Swaminatha Iyer who first unearthed that history through Sangam literary texts.
The Chief Minister recalled that countless precious palm-leaf manuscripts were on the brink of being destroyed by neglect, soil, and fire before Swaminatha Iyer painstakingly traveled across Tamil Nadu to collect, transcribe, and edit them into printed volumes. His selfless scholarship brought masterpieces like the Silappathikaram, Manimekalai, and Purananuru back into public circulation, sparking the modern Tamil renaissance and laying the foundation for Dravidian cultural revival.
Stalin declared that the Tamil world will remain indebted to Swaminatha Iyer's tireless conservation efforts as long as the language endures. He affirmed that the state government is dedicated to digitizing historical manuscripts, funding classical Tamil research, and expanding archival infrastructure to keep this literary legacy accessible to global scholars and future generations.
