My dear sisters and brothers from other states,

Ever wondered how many Indian languages Hindi has swallowed? Bhojpuri, Maithili, Awadhi, Braj, Bundeli, Garhwali, Kumaoni, Magahi, Marwari, Malvi, Chhattisgarhi, Santhali, Angika, Ho, Kharia, Khortha, Kurmali, Kurukh, Mundari and many more are now gasping for survival.

The push for a monolithic Hindi identity is what kills ancient mother tongues. UP and Bihar were never just "Hindi heartlands." Their real languages are now relics of the past.

Tamil Nadu resists because we know where this ends. தமிழ் விழித்தது; தமிழினத்தின் பண்பாடு பிழைத்தது! சில மொழிகள் இந்திக்கு இடம் கொடுத்தன; இருந்த இடம் தெரியாமல் தொலைந்தன!

Editorial context

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed an open communication to citizens and linguistic communities across India, highlighting how the aggressive promotion of a monolithic Hindi identity has led to the gradual marginalization and erosion of numerous distinct regional mother tongues. Stalin listed languages such as Bhojpuri, Maithili, Awadhi, Braj, Bundeli, Garhwali, Kumaoni, Magahi, Marwari, Malvi, Chhattisgarhi, and Santhali, noting that these historic linguistic traditions are now struggling for cultural survival after being subsumed under standardized Hindi.

The Chief Minister observed that northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were never monolithic Hindi territories, pointing out that their genuine native languages have been diminished into mere regional relics due to centralizing linguistic policies. Stalin explained that Tamil Nadu's steadfast resistance to Hindi imposition is grounded in a clear historical understanding of this destructive homogenization process. He stated that because Tamil society awakened and organized early to protect its linguistic heritage, Tamil civilization survived and prospered with undiminished vitality.

Stalin concluded that defending linguistic diversity is vital for preserving India's federal essence. He affirmed that Tamil Nadu's resistance serves as a protective bulwark for all indigenous mother tongues across the country.
