Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued letters to chief ministers and major political party leaders across seven other states, urging concerted action against proposed parliamentary delimitation formulas that threaten federal balance. Stalin described the Union government's delimitation roadmap as a direct attack on constitutional democracy, warning that recalculating legislative representation without historical protections penalizes states that excelled in family planning, public health, and literacy.

Reaching out to chief ministers in Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, and Punjab, Stalin called for unified political resistance across regional boundaries. He announced the establishment of a Joint Action Committee tasked with defending regional representation, inviting opposition and regional party executives to send high-level representatives to participate in deliberations.

Stalin scheduled the inaugural Joint Action Committee conference for March 22, 2025, in Chennai, calling upon democratic organizations to transcend partisan distinctions in protecting the political future of their populations. He affirmed that southern and eastern states must collaborate closely to ensure that good governance does not result in political disenfranchisement. He expressed confidence that broad solidarity will safeguard federal balance in Parliament.
