Hon’ble PM @narendramodi, The tears shed by Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu, and the anguish they have endured over the years, cannot be captured in words. The sea, their source of livelihood, has become a place of fear and uncertainty due to repeated attacks by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Today, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, constituted by the will and mandate of the people of our state, has unanimously passed a resolution calling for the retrieval of #Katchatheevu to safeguard our historical rights, livelihoods, and access to traditional fishing grounds.

We urge you, during your much-anticipated forthcoming visit to Sri Lanka, to firmly demand the release of our detained fishermen, along with their boats, on a goodwill basis.

Editorial context

Addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his scheduled diplomatic visit to Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin urged decisive central action to safeguard Indian fishermen. Stalin emphasized that traditional coastal waters, once a source of livelihood, have turned into zones of constant fear due to repeated assaults and detentions by the Sri Lankan Navy. He highlighted that the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly had unanimously adopted a resolution demanding the retrieval of Katchatheevu to restore historical fishing rights.

The Chief Minister called upon the Prime Minister to use bilateral diplomatic discussions to secure the immediate, unconditional release of all detained Tamil Nadu fishermen and their confiscated mechanised boats. He pointed out that prolonged impounding of fishing vessels destroys the economic assets of coastal families, plunging hundreds of households into severe financial distress. Stalin stressed that the recurring crisis requires a durable bilateral solution that guarantees safe navigation and fishing access in traditional waters.

Stalin urged the central leadership to defend the rights of Tamil fishermen with the same diplomatic vigor extended to citizens across northern coastal boundaries. He reiterated that the state government will persist in demanding institutional safeguards to protect the lives and dignity of maritime workers.
