Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued a vehement condemnation following the denial of presidential assent to the Tamil Nadu NEET Exemption Bill, terming the decision a dark chapter in the history of Indian federalism. Stalin recounted that the legislation had been formulated based on exhaustive findings by a committee headed by a retired High Court judge and subsequently passed twice unanimously by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He stressed that the state government had comprehensively answered every clarification sought by central ministries.

The Chief Minister characterized the refusal of assent as a grave injustice that tramples upon the democratic will of the entire population of Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test severely disadvantages students from rural, government school, and lower-income backgrounds while fostering a predatory private commercial coaching industry. Stalin maintained that state legislatures possess the legitimate constitutional competence to determine admission procedures for higher education within their territories.

Stalin declared that the denial of assent will not silence the state's collective demand for educational equity. He affirmed that Tamil Nadu will relentlessly continue its legal, legislative, and political battle until the injustice of NEET is eliminated completely.
