As we discussed at the #CPIM24thPartyConference, recently held in Madurai, this verdict marks the first step in defending states' rights. But this is just the beginning. There is much more to be done in our continued fight for federalism and the will of the people.
Reflecting on discussions held during the 24th Party Conference of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Madurai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin characterized the Supreme Court's ruling on gubernatorial delays as a vital initial breakthrough for state rights. Stalin noted that while the judicial intervention curbed arbitrary obstruction of legislative bills by governors, the overarching struggle to restore constitutional federalism requires sustained institutional, legal, and political mobilization across regions.
The Chief Minister explained that state autonomy faces multifaceted pressures, ranging from fiscal centralization under the GST regime to encroachments on state legislative domains such as education and cooperative societies. He emphasized that progressive regional and secular parties must forge durable coalitions to defend constitutional principles against unilateral central overreach. Stalin stated that protecting the will of elected legislatures forms the indispensable bedrock of parliamentary democracy.
Stalin called upon political organizations and civic movements across all states to intensify their collective defense of federalism. He affirmed that Tamil Nadu will persist in building multi-party solidarity to ensure that constitutional decentralization, fiscal rights, and state legislative sovereignty are comprehensively secured.
