As demographic imbalance grows between northern and southern states, it is vital to freeze the number of Parliamentary seats. Proportional representation cannot be applied blindly when it threatens federal harmony. The progress of India depends on a fair balance of power across regions.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin drew attention to an insightful analysis by senior advocate Arvind P. Datar published in The Indian Express, which argued for freezing the current allocation of parliamentary seats across Indian states. Stalin emphasized that growing demographic imbalances between northern and southern states must not result in political disenfranchisement for regions that successfully implemented national population stabilization policies. He warned that applying mechanical proportional representation to seat reallocation would severely disrupt federal harmony.

The Chief Minister maintained that India's unity depends on maintaining an equitable balance of political power between different linguistic regions and states. He pointed out that penalizing southern states with reduced parliamentary representation after decades of exemplary socio-economic governance, healthcare investments, and female literacy programs would violate basic constitutional equity. Stalin reiterated that federal governance cannot reduce regional autonomy to simple arithmetic dominance.

Stalin called upon democratic leaders across all political spectrums to endorse the demand for fair delimitation. He reaffirmed that Tamil Nadu will spearhead national consensus to ensure that parliamentary representation guarantees regional dignity and prevents political marginalization of progressive states.
