Marking National Transgender Day on April 15, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin reaffirmed his government's steadfast commitment to securing dignity, equal rights, and economic self-sufficiency for transgender persons. Stalin recalled that former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi pioneered institutional recognition for the community by giving them a dignified identity and establishing the country's first Transgender Welfare Board. He emphasized that Dravidian Model governance builds upon this progressive foundation through innovative affirmative interventions.
The Chief Minister highlighted key welfare measures introduced by his administration, including free local bus travel for trans persons and the extension of the Pudhumai Penn monthly financial assistance. He noted that the government has assumed full responsibility for covering the entire higher education expenses of transgender students enrolled in colleges. Stalin also referenced the pioneering induction of transgender personnel into the Home Guards, demonstrating practical avenues for dignified employment and social integration.
Stalin concluded by asserting that genuine social progress requires eliminating entrenched societal prejudices and creating equal opportunities for marginalized identities. He stated that Tamil Nadu will continue to champion comprehensive welfare policies that guarantee personal safety, educational advancement, and social respect for every transgender citizen across the state.
