More than 75 years have passed since we adopted our Constitution. The current malaise stems from the politicisation of constitutional offices, including Governors, the Vice-President and even the President, to undermine opposition governments and inject right-wing narratives into public discourse.

In a democracy, governments are to be run by elected representatives, not by ceremonial appointees. No one, however high, can be above the law. The same has been pointed out by our Hon’ble Supreme Court, and its historic judgement is a step towards resetting the process. Hence, it is understandable that this welcome course correction has rattled many anti-democratic forces. The need of the hour is to ensure that this reset is implemented in its true spirit.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued a profound constitutional critique reflecting on seventy-five years of the Indian Constitution, expressing deep concern over the partisan degradation of high constitutional offices. Stalin observed that the current political malaise stems from the deliberate weaponization of ceremonial offices, including Governors, the Vice-President, and the President, to subvert elected opposition-led state governments and inject partisan narratives into public discourse. He emphasized that in a constitutional republic, governance belongs strictly to elected representatives of the people, not nominated functionaries.

The Chief Minister welcomed the Supreme Court's historic verdict setting binding limits on gubernatorial authority as an indispensable institutional correction aimed at resetting constitutional governance. Stalin noted that this judicial clarification has visibly unsettled anti-democratic forces who relied on unelected appointees to block legislative welfare enactments passed by state assemblies. He stressed that preserving constitutional democracy requires all state institutions, executive authorities, and judicial bodies to enforce this reset in its true letter and spirit.

Stalin declared that no individual or constitutional appointee, regardless of formal stature, can operate above statutory law and democratic mandate. He reaffirmed Tamil Nadu's resolve to continue defending federal democracy.
