Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated a modern residential Mahout Village featuring 44 newly constructed government houses at the renowned Theppakadu Elephant Camp in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. The housing project fulfills an assurance Stalin personally gave to indigenous elephant caretakers Bomman and Bellie, who earned global acclaim in the Academy Award-winning documentary The Elephant Whisperers. When the Chief Minister felicitated the couple following their Oscar triumph, they had requested dignified, permanent housing for the camp's devoted mahouts and cavadis.
Demonstrating prompt executive follow-through, the state forest department constructed the eco-friendly residential complex, providing traditional tribal forest caretakers with well-ventilated concrete dwellings equipped with modern sanitation, solar lighting, and piped drinking water. Stalin toured the new village, handed keys to resident mahout families, and commended their generational expertise in wildlife conservation and humane captive elephant management across forest tracts.
The Chief Minister emphasized that safeguarding the welfare and dignity of indigenous forest communities is integral to sustainable ecological conservation under Dravidian Model governance. He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to supporting frontline forest personnel and indigenous families who protect Tamil Nadu's precious biodiversity.
