Tamil Nadu under the #DravidianModel continues to redefine responsible financial governance. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that Greater Chennai Corporation has successfully listed 200 crore rupees worth of green municipal bonds on the National Stock Exchange. The landmark bond issuance represents a pioneering milestone in urban financial governance, designed to mobilize capital directly for constructing essential civic infrastructure across the metropolitan area. Proceeds from the municipal bond offering will be channelled specifically into expanding comprehensive stormwater drain networks, strengthening climate-resilient flood prevention works, and upgrading urban civic facilities across flood-vulnerable neighborhoods throughout Chennai.
Stalin highlighted that tapping formal institutional capital markets allows municipal bodies to drastically reduce borrowing costs and lighten existing debt burdens through competitive interest structures. By demonstrating rigorous fiscal discipline, transparent accounting, and stable revenue collection, Chennai Corporation established substantial investor confidence, enabling it to access diversified market financing without relying solely on budgetary subventions from the state government.
The Chief Minister emphasized that responsible, forward-thinking fiscal management defines the Dravidian Model of urban administration. He asserted that combining innovative municipal bond financing with accountable project execution ensures Chennai builds world-class civic resilience while preserving long-term financial stability.
