Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin formally opened the sluice gates of the Stanley Reservoir at Mettur, initiating the annual release of Cauvery river waters to support the Kuruvai paddy cultivation season across the delta districts. The ceremonial opening took place following traditional rituals and floral offerings, with senior ministers, water resources department engineers, and farmer representatives in attendance. Stalin expressed hope that timely water availability will help farmers achieve record agricultural yields and secure prosperous livelihoods throughout the Cauvery basin.
The initial water discharge of three thousand cusecs will be stepped up progressively based on delta irrigation requirements, traversing Salem, Erode, Namakkal, and Tiruchirappalli before reaching the Grand Anicut regulators. State engineers completed extensive desilting works across thousands of kilometers of riverbeds, major canals, and distributaries ahead of the release, ensuring swift and unobstructed water transmission to tail-end agricultural fields. The state government also coordinated with the agriculture department to supply quality seeds, fertilizers, and subsidized inputs to delta farmers.
Stalin affirmed that timely irrigation management remains vital for Tamil Nadu agrarian economy. He reaffirmed the government steadfast commitment to protecting state water rights and ensuring farmer prosperity.
