Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the formal release of Cauvery irrigation water from the ancient Grand Anicut, known historically as Kallanai, to irrigate agricultural lands across the delta region. Invoking verses from classical Sangam literature Pattinappalai celebrating the Chola monarch Karikalan hydrological engineering, Stalin extended festive greetings to the farming community. The water release marks the official commencement of agricultural operations for the Kuruvai crop season across Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and adjoining districts.
Water discharged from the Mettur reservoir reached the Grand Anicut regulators, from where engineers distributed flow systematically into the Cauvery, Vennar, Grand Anicut Canal, and Kollidam rivers. The timely opening ensures adequate moisture for seed sowing, nursery preparation, and transplantation across several lakh acres of fertile river basin acreage. Stalin expressed confidence that the life-giving river flows will yield a bountiful harvest, enriching rural livelihoods and bolstering statewide food security.
Stalin affirmed that the state government prioritizes modern water management, desilting of irrigation channels, and prompt input delivery. The administration remains committed to safeguarding riparian rights and supporting delta farmers throughout the ongoing cultivation cycle.
