Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced significant ecological milestones achieved under the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, reporting that the state has restored 707 hectares of degraded coastal mangrove cover over the past three years. The administration accomplished this vital environmental turnaround by planting 16 lakh mangrove saplings along vulnerable coastal belts. Stalin also revealed that the state government created 1,350 hectares of new mangrove forests in Tiruvarur district alone, establishing an unprecedented record in regional conservation and biodiversity expansion.
The Chief Minister emphasized that coastal mangrove wetlands serve as essential natural shields against destructive cyclonic storms, sea erosion, and climate fluctuations. He highlighted that expanding mangrove habitats provides rich nursery grounds for marine biodiversity and safeguards the traditional livelihoods of coastal fishing communities. The government continues to execute comprehensive wetland restoration programs using scientific afforestation methods to enhance carbon sequestration capacity across Tamil Nadu coastal zones.
Stalin stated that rigorous ecological stewardship remains an integral pillar of the Dravidian Model vision for sustainable economic progress. He reaffirmed Tamil Nadu's determination to lead climate adaptation initiatives through long-term community forestry partnerships.
