At a time when there is a growing demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, the current events unfolding there are a grim reminder of how far things have deteriorated.
The elected CM Hon'ble @OmarAbdullah is being placed under house arrest simply for wanting to pay homage to the 1931 martyrs and is forced to climb walls to do so. Is this how an elected Chief Minister should be treated?
This is not just about one state or one leader. From Tamil Nadu to Kashmir, the Union BJP Government is systematically stripping away the rights of elected State Governments.
If this can happen in Kashmir, it can happen anywhere, to any elected representative of the people. Every democratic voice must unequivocally condemn this.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed profound alarm and severe condemnation over the arbitrary house arrest of elected Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who was forcibly restrained by police simply for attempting to pay solemn homage to 1931 martyrs in Srinagar. Stalin termed the undignified treatment of a democratically chosen Chief Minister a tragic illustration of democratic decay under the Union Bharatiya Janata Party government.
The Chief Minister stressed that the systematic dismantling of administrative autonomy in Jammu and Kashmir is not an isolated regional dispute, but represents a dangerous nationwide blueprint aimed at subverting non-BJP state governments from Tamil Nadu to the Himalayas. Stalin warned that if an elected Chief Minister can be arbitrarily confined and forced to climb perimeter walls to exercise civil liberties, no elected representative in India remains safe from central authoritarianism. He called upon all constitutional and democratic forces across the nation to unite against this blatant misuse of federal power.
Stalin concluded that Tamil Nadu stands resolutely in solidarity with the people of Kashmir in their struggle for restored statehood. He reaffirmed that federalism and democratic accountability must be vigorously defended.
