On this #WorldElephantDay let us reflect on the vital role of elephants in shaping Tamil Nadu’s natural heritage and history.

In Coimbatore, Hon'ble @MoEFCC Minister @BYadavBJP is joining the celebrations and will visit our AI powered early warning system at Madukkarai, which has enabled over 2,800 safe elephant crossings since February 2024 with zero train collisions.

Our #DravidianModel government recently inaugurated the Mahout Village at Theppakadu, featuring eco-friendly houses for mahouts and cavadies who care for these gentle giants. It strengthens the welfare of caregivers while advancing conservation.

Let us pledge to keep elephants safe and free for generations to come. @RRajaKannappan @supriyasahuias

Editorial context

Commemorating World Elephant Day, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin highlighted the integral ecological role played by Asian elephants in shaping the natural heritage, dense forests, and biological biodiversity of the Western and Eastern Ghats. Stalin welcomed Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav to the celebratory events organized in Coimbatore, highlighting collaborative federal and state initiatives dedicated to wildlife habitat protection, mitigating human-animal conflicts, and pioneering tech-driven animal safety measures along vulnerable infrastructure corridors.

The Chief Minister highlighted the extraordinary success of Tamil Nadu's artificial intelligence-powered early warning surveillance system established along critical railway tracks at Madukkarai. Stalin noted that since its operational commissioning in February 2024, the sensory surveillance framework has facilitated over 2,800 safe elephant rail track crossings without a single train collision, establishing an internationally acclaimed conservation benchmark. Stalin further referenced the newly opened Mahout Village at Theppakadu, providing permanent eco-friendly housing for dedicated tribal mahouts and cavadies.

Stalin concluded that safeguarding elephants and supporting their frontline traditional caregivers remain essential conservation imperatives. He pledged that Tamil Nadu will persistently pioneer advanced ecological protections to ensure elephants thrive safely in contiguous forest habitats.
