In a widely read Independence Day essay published in The Hindu, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin reflected on India's freedom struggle, emphasizing that the founding ideals of national liberation were anchored in unity in diversity and the sacred equal dignity of all federating states. Stalin expressed profound concern that this democratic spirit is confronting severe institutional strain caused by escalating Union government overreach, discretionary withholding of statutory fiscal transfers, and calculated encroachment upon state legislative authority.
The Chief Minister asserted that authentic federalism cannot be misconstrued as a patronizing administrative concession granted by central authorities in New Delhi, but represents the foundational bedrock upon which the Indian republic was established. Stalin warned that centralizing power and depriving progressive states of legitimate developmental funds, education allocations, and disaster assistance undermines national cohesiveness and economic growth, subverting the constitutional framework designed by the constituent assembly.
Stalin urged national leaders, constitutional scholars, and democratic parties to unite in defending decentralized governance. He concluded that respecting state autonomy, regional cultural aspirations, and linguistic diversity provides the only durable pathway toward a strong, harmonious, and equitable Indian Union.
