Marking the 79th Independence Day at Fort St. George in Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin unfurled the national tricolor and articulated a principled vision of cooperative federalism, asserting that only an India grounded in genuine state autonomy and decentralized governance can truly develop into a resilient and prosperous global power. Stalin emphasized that safeguarding state rights through determined constitutional measures is the indispensable remedy to counter authoritarian centralization and preserve democratic pluralism across the republic.
The Chief Minister invoked the historic legacy of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, recalling that it was Kalaignar who secured the constitutional right for state Chief Ministers to hoist the national flag on Independence Day in 1974. Stalin noted that exercising this hard-won democratic privilege reinforces the moral and political duty of regional leaders to defend the autonomy, linguistic heritage, and financial entitlements of state governments.
Stalin affirmed that the Dravidian movement will persistently champion the federal ideals envisioned by the founding framers of the Constitution. He concluded that honoring India's diverse states as equal partners remains essential to preserving democratic unity and national stability.
