With US tariffs rising from 25% to a possible 50%, Tamil Nadu will be hit harder than most states as our exports are deeply tied to the US market. Lakhs of jobs in textiles, leather, auto, machinery and other sectors are at risk.
I have urged the Hon’ble PM Thiru. @NarendraModi to act swiftly by fixing GST on man-made fibres at 5%, removing duty on cotton imports, extending easy low-interest loans with moratorium, and enhancing export incentives and credit.
Tamil Nadu will work closely with the Union Government to overcome this trade crisis.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding immediate and coordinated federal interventions to shield domestic manufacturing industries from escalating United States import tariffs, which threaten to jump from twenty-five percent to fifty percent. Stalin underscored that Tamil Nadu's industrial ecosystem is deeply integrated into global supply chains, warning that severe tariff barriers place hundreds of thousands of jobs at immediate risk across textiles, leather goods, automotive components, and industrial machinery sectors.
The Chief Minister outlined concrete economic relief measures requiring decisive action from the Union Government, urging New Delhi to fix Goods and Services Tax (GST) on man-made fibers at a uniform five percent, eliminate customs import duties on raw cotton, extend concessional low-interest working capital loans with repayment moratoriums, and enhance export credit subsidies.
Stalin assured the Prime Minister that the Tamil Nadu government is prepared to collaborate closely with central authorities to overcome this acute international trade disruption. He concluded that preserving export competitiveness and industrial employment requires immediate, proactive federal policy coordination, targeted economic stimulus, and sustained fiscal backing.
