A Union is strong only when its States are strong. Tamil Nadu’s High-Level Committee on Union–State Relations has released a Questionnaire to seek the views of all States & UTs.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin dispatched formal communications to all state Chief Ministers and leaders of prominent political parties across the nation, urging them to actively engage with the comprehensive questionnaire released by Tamil Nadu's High-Level Committee on Union–State Relations. Stalin underscored the foundational constitutional principle that a strong Union can only be built upon the foundation of strong, autonomous states possessing robust fiscal and legislative authority.

The Chief Minister explained that the High-Level Committee was instituted by the Tamil Nadu government to conduct an in-depth empirical assessment of the structural erosion of state powers over recent decades. He highlighted key areas of concern, including centralized fiscal centralization, curtailment of state revenue streams, unilateral legislative encroachment on concurrent list subjects, and the controversial role of appointed governors impeding democratically passed state legislation.

Stalin urged national leaders to transcend regional and partisan divides to formulate a collective federal agenda that restores constitutional equilibrium. He affirmed that cooperative federalism must be revitalized through shared democratic struggle, ensuring that regional languages, local governance priorities, and state autonomy are safeguarded against centralizing overreach.
