Writing in @BSIndia, I have set out how the #USTariff will strike Tamil Nadu harder than most states, and why urgent action from the Union Govt is essential. The key points highlighted are:

▪ 31% of Tamil Nadu’s exports go to the US, making the state more vulnerable than the national average. ▪ The State Government has rolled out subsidies, schemes and support, but its capacity is limited. ▪ The Union Government must step in with relief measures, GST correction, credit support and new FTAs.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin authored an incisive analytical article in the national financial daily Business Standard, detailing how retaliatory import tariffs imposed by the United States will disproportionately damage Tamil Nadu's industrial economy, and demanding immediate, targeted intervention from the Union Government. Stalin pointed out that thirty-one percent of Tamil Nadu's total exports are destined for the American market, making the state significantly more vulnerable to international tariff shocks than the national average.

The Chief Minister explained that while the state government has proactively rolled out localized subsidies, fiscal incentives, and institutional support mechanisms to assist affected manufacturing units, state-level financial capacity is constitutionally and fiscally constrained. Stalin emphasized that the Union Government possesses primary authority over external commerce, tariffs, and macroeconomic policy, making federal action indispensable to avert widespread factory closures and mass unemployment in industrial hubs like Tiruppur and Coimbatore.

Stalin called upon New Delhi to swiftly enact a relief package comprising export credit support, emergency working capital facilities, GST duty corrections, and expedited Free Trade Agreements. He concluded that safeguarding industrial livelihoods requires collaborative federal partnership.
