Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin reflected on his maiden legislative speech delivered as a young Member of the Legislative Assembly in 1989, wherein he fervently advocated providing free bus passes for school and college students. Stalin recalled that former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi accepted the proposal and enacted the pioneering welfare scheme, which subsequently served as an enlightened developmental model for transit authorities across India to remove economic barriers to education.
Building on that historic foundation, Stalin highlighted that the current Dravidian Model administration operates dedicated Student Special bus services across Tamil Nadu, ensuring safe, punctual, and comfortable daily transit for pupils during peak morning and evening school hours. The Chief Minister commended Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar and state transport corporation personnel for operating these specialized routes to prevent overcrowding and protect students' daily transit safety.
Stalin urged transport officials to remain vigilant and continuously monitor route occupancy to expand services wherever student demand increases. He concluded that providing accessible, free, and dignified public transportation to youth directly strengthens educational retention, particularly among female students and rural children pursuing higher academic ambitions.
