Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that Tamil Nadu will undertake archaeological investigations to illuminate the ancient maritime splendor and commercial history of Poompuhar. Citing classical Sangam poetry from the Pattinappalai describing swift ocean-going horses and mountain-borne pepper sacks arriving at ancient ports, Stalin declared that the state will bring Poompuhar's historical prosperity to international attention. He linked this initiative to earlier breakthroughs at Keeladi, which established the antiquity of Sangam urbanization, and discoveries proving Tamil iron-smelting technology dates back four millennia.
Stalin emphasized that unearthing Tamil Nadu's ancient maritime past is vital to establishing the civilizational roots and global mercantile reach of ancient Tamils. Through scientific excavations and marine archaeological research, the government seeks to reconstruct the thriving coastal trade networks that linked ancient Tamil ports to Mediterranean and Southeast Asian civilizations.
The Chief Minister asserted that documenting indigenous civilizational heritage through evidence-based archaeological research forms a key cultural pillar of his administration. Stalin reaffirmed that Tamil Nadu will continue investing resources into scientific dating methods and state-of-the-art museum facilities to ensure the world recognizes the profound antiquity, literary brilliance, and commercial achievements of ancient Tamil society.
