Chief Minister M.K. Stalin celebrated the international recognition conferred upon Tamil Nadu for establishing India's first-ever Dugong Conservation Reserve in the shallow marine ecosystem of the Palk Bay, spanning the coastal waters of Thanjavur and Pudukkottai districts. Ahead of the prestigious IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi, global environmental member organizations voted overwhelmingly to pass an official resolution commending Tamil Nadu's visionary conservation initiative.
Stalin congratulated the Tamil Nadu Environment, Climate Change and Forest Department, specialized wildlife researchers, and civil society partners including the Omcar Foundation for their dedicated ecological stewardship. He noted that establishing the specialized reserve protects vulnerable dugongs, commonly known as sea cows, while simultaneously conserving extensive underwater seagrass meadows that serve as vital carbon sinks and breeding nurseries for commercial marine species.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the initiative exemplifies how scientific conservation can harmoniously coexist with traditional artisanal fishing communities through collaborative management and grassroots awareness. Stalin affirmed that Tamil Nadu will continue leading India in pioneering bold ecological, climate-resilient, and biodiversity preservation policies recognized on premier international environmental platforms, safeguarding fragile coastal habitats for generations to come.
