The shameful act against Hon’ble CJI Thiru. B. R. Gavai inside the #SupremeCourt is an attack on the highest judicial office of our democracy and deserves the strongest condemnation.

The manner in which the Hon'ble CJI responded with grace, calm and magnanimity shows the strength of the institution, but that cannot make us take the incident lightly. The reason revealed by the attacker for his act shows how deeply the oppressive and hierarchical mindset still lingers in our society.

We must nurture a culture that respects and protects our institutions and demonstrates maturity in our conduct.

Editorial context

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued a forceful condemnation of the disgraceful incident targeting the Chief Justice of India, B.R. Gavai, inside the Supreme Court premises, describing it as an unprecedented assault on the nation's highest judicial office. Stalin underscored that an attack upon the apex court undermines the very foundations of constitutional democracy and merits unreserved public repudiation across all political lines.

Commending Chief Justice Gavai for responding with extraordinary composure, dignity, and magnanimity, Stalin cautioned that such institutional grace should not lead the nation to treat the incident lightly. He observed that the motive disclosed by the assailant exposes the disturbing degree to which feudal, hierarchical, and oppressive caste prejudices continue to persist within segments of contemporary Indian society.

The Chief Minister asserted that a healthy constitutional democracy requires nurturing a public culture that respects judicial independence and adheres to mature civic conduct. He warned that ideological forces encouraging disrespect toward constitutional authorities erode social stability. Stalin called upon democratic citizens and institutions across India to stand united in defending constitutional safeguards, preserving the rule of law, and eradicating entrenched social bigotry from all democratic institutions.
