Chief Minister M.K. Stalin commemorated the death anniversary of freedom fighter Sankaralinganar, who sacrificed his life after a seventy-six-day hunger strike demanding that the state be named Tamil Nadu. Sankaralinganar began his historic fast in Virudhunagar, enduring immense physical suffering while refusing to abandon his principled constitutional stance. Stalin recalled that Sankaralinganar stood steadfast in his demand, giving his life for an aspiration shared across Tamil society.
Stalin observed that the dream for which Sankaralinganar perished remained unfulfilled until the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam formed the state government under Perarignar Anna. It was Anna's administration that enacted the historic legislation designating the province as Tamil Nadu, giving statutory reality to the martyr's supreme sacrifice. Stalin noted that this historical struggle highlights the deep connection between the Dravidian movement and the preservation of regional linguistic identity.
Concluding his tribute, Stalin affirmed that as long as the name Tamil Nadu endures on this soil, the people will remember Sankaralinganar's sacrifice with profound gratitude. He reiterated that honoring martyrs who defended the state's self-respect and cultural dignity remains an enduring principle of the administration and public life.
