Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed a formal letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi coinciding with the official diplomatic visit of Sri Lanka's Prime Minister to India, reiterating urgent demands to resolve the chronic distress facing Tamil Nadu fishermen. Stalin urged the Union Government to utilize the bilateral summit to raise core issues affecting coastal communities, stressing that an early, durable, and humane solution is imperative to secure fishermen's livelihoods.

In his comprehensive communication, the Chief Minister pressed for the permanent retrieval of Katchatheevu island to restore traditional fishing rights in the Palk Strait. He demanded immediate high-level diplomatic intervention to secure the unconditional release of all apprehended Tamil Nadu fishermen and their seized mechanized fishing boats. Stalin strongly condemned escalating mid-sea attacks and harassment by the Sri Lankan Navy, highlighting the severe economic devastation caused by Sri Lanka's policy of nationalizing and auctioning impounded Indian trawlers.

Stalin called upon the Prime Minister to immediately convene the long-delayed Joint Working Group on Fisheries to institutionalize conflict-free maritime protocols. He reiterated that Tamil Nadu expects decisive central action to safeguard its seafaring citizens from persistent oceanic hostility.
