M.K. Stalin accused the Union BJP government of denying Metro Rail projects to Madurai and Coimbatore while approving similar projects for smaller Tier-II cities in BJP-ruled states, calling it a distortion of federal principles and political retaliation for Tamil Nadu voters rejecting the BJP. He vowed to secure Metro Rail for both cities, citing the state's earlier success in keeping the Chennai Metro project on track despite alleged attempts to stall it.

The Union BJP government has denied Metro Rail for ‘Temple City’ Madurai and for ‘South India’s Manchester’, Coimbatore, on flimsy grounds.

A government exists to serve people without bias. Yet the Union #BJP treats #TamilNadu’s democratic choice as a reason to take revenge. Pushing such a political custom, in which BJP ruled states get Metros for smaller Tier II cities while opposition ruled States are deprived, is a disgraceful approach. Tamil Nadu, the land of #SelfRespect, will never accept such a distortion of federal principles.

They attempted to stall the #Chennai Metro, and we overcame those malicious attempts and kept the project progressing. With the same determination, we will secure the #MetroRail that #Madurai and #Coimbatore need for their future growth.

Tamil Nadu will fight! Tamil Nadu will win!

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin strongly criticized the Union BJP government for denying Metro Rail projects to Madurai, referred to as the 'Temple City,' and Coimbatore, called 'South India's Manchester.' He argued that a government should serve all citizens without bias, and accused the BJP of retaliating against Tamil Nadu for rejecting the party electorally. Stalin pointed out what he described as a double standard: BJP-ruled states receiving Metro Rail approval even for smaller Tier-II cities, while opposition-ruled states like Tamil Nadu are denied such projects. He described this as a disgraceful distortion of federal principles that self-respecting Tamil Nadu would never accept. Stalin recalled that his government had previously overcome attempts to stall and delay the Chennai Metro project, and pledged the same determination in securing Metro Rail systems for Madurai and Coimbatore, framing the issue as part of a broader fight for the state's developmental rights within the Indian federal structure.
