M.K. Stalin attended the closing ceremony of the Chennai International Book Fair and released translated literary works. He criticised the Union Government for political interference that he said led to this year's national Sahitya Akademi award not being announced, and said the Tamil Nadu government will now give its own annual 'Semmozhi Ilakkiya Award' for outstanding literary works published in Indian languages. He also thanked International Booker Prize-winning author Banu Mushtaq for praising the state government's reading-promotion efforts.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin attended the concluding ceremony of the Chennai International Book Fair (CIBF 2026) and released a set of translated literary works, calling literature a bridge that connects people across languages. He alleged that political interference and narrow considerations by the Union Government had resulted in this year's Sahitya Akademi award going unannounced. In response, Stalin said the Tamil Nadu government would institute its own annual award, the 'Semmozhi Ilakkiya Award,' to recognise outstanding literary works published across Indian languages. He also praised International Booker Prize-winning writer Banu Mushtaq, who spoke at the event about progressive Dravidian critical perspectives and commended the state's efforts to promote reading as policy under the Dravidian Model government. Minister Anbil Mahesh was tagged in the tweet in connection with the book fair.
