In a pre-Budget appeal, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin listed a series of specific demands from the Union government ahead of the Union Budget 2026, tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. His demands included release of Rs 3,548 crore in education funding he said has been withheld from students, along with metro rail projects for Coimbatore and Madurai, new railway projects, and Rs 3,112 crore for the Jal Jeevan Mission, the Union scheme for rural piped drinking water which Stalin said Tamil Nadu has been implementing effectively. He also called for tax devolution to states at 50%, as recommended by the Finance Commission. Stalin said he hoped that, with elections in mind, the Union government would this time follow through on announcements for Tamil Nadu, contrasting this with the Madurai All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which he said has remained a mere announcement without proper funding and a fixed implementation timeline.
