M.K. Stalin launched the state-wide expansion of what he described as India's first scheme to provide free food to sanitary workers during their work hours. The scheme began in November 2025 in Chennai Corporation for 29,455 workers and has now been extended to cover a total of 1,29,689 sanitary workers across all municipal corporations, municipalities and town panchayats in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the state-wide rollout of a scheme to provide free meals to sanitary workers during their duty hours, describing it as the first such initiative in India. According to the post, the scheme was first introduced in the Greater Chennai Corporation in November 2025, benefiting 29,455 sanitary workers. Stalin announced its extension to the remaining local bodies: 48,768 workers across 24 other municipal corporations, 29,556 workers across 145 municipalities, and 21,910 workers across 479 town panchayats, bringing the total coverage to 1,29,689 sanitary workers state-wide. He linked the scheme to broader welfare measures for sanitary workers, including housing, entrepreneurship loans, life insurance, and higher-education scholarships for their children, describing these as part of his government's 'Dravidian Model' approach, and said more welfare measures for the community would follow.
